Mondays 9-10PM

Wednesdays 8:30-9:30 PM

Everyone is welcome, no previous experience is necessary

This class is a culmination of movements that I have found helpful to maintain a strong and balanced body during my years of rigorous ballet training continuing into my professional career and beyond.  The aim is to match our strength with our flexibility to create equilibrium in our bodies.

While teaching ballet for over a decade, the most common question that I have received is, "What can I do outside of the class to increase my flexibility, extension, turn-out, etc?". This class encapsulates the answer to this question. We will focus on how to warm up and condition the body in a way that leaves one feeling centered. This continuous one-hour sequence moves progressively to hone the whole body. Rooted in floor work, we start slowly by warming up the joints and then dive into dynamic stretches. Upper body warm-up movements gleaned from the work of Merce Cunningham are incorporated. As well, we will explore a variety of ballet positions and pathways in new contexts to increase strength while simultaneously working within the full range of one's mobility. This class moves thoughtfully and systematically to maximize symmetry and proper placement.

Please bring a mat and water.

ABOUT ZOE

Zoe was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In her youth she had the privilege of scholarship training at numerous summer intensives such as the National Ballet of Canada, Miami City Ballet, and the Harid Conservatory. Zoe moved away from home to study extensively at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet’s pre-professional year-round program while simultaneously completing her high school education.

After graduation, she began her professional career in Vancouver BC where she danced for the Vancouver Opera and toured BC performing under the direction of Chan Hon Goh. Zoe then proceeded to dance as a member of the Connecticut Ballet Company. Subsequently, she moved to New York City, where she was granted multiple fellowships with the Merce Cunningham Trust to perform reconstructions of the Cunningham Company’s original works at City Center. Upon relocation to California, Zoe enjoyed performing at LACMA and the Norton Simon Museum before transitioning into her teaching career. Zoe has had the pleasure of teaching ballet courses at Hussian College until its closure. She has worked for Align Ballet as an instructor and administrator for numerous years and delights in the opportunity to share the art of ballet with anyone who wishes to learn.  Zoe believes in the power of movement to provide healing, growth, and a greater sense of vitality.
